Thermal and Green Hydrogen

ENGIE operates a diversified range of assets that ensure a secure and reliable supply of electricity to our stakeholders and customers across the African continent. We believe that grid scale generation will remains essential for Africa’s energy needs.

As a leading Independent Power Producer ENGIE has the following thermal power stations in operation:

  • Safi Energy Company in Morocco which provides 1,38 GW directly into the grid
  • Avon and Dedisa Peaking Power in South Africa which generates and provides 1 GW directly into the grid.

We are currently a front runner in the development of a large-scale hydrogen economy
that will enable the energy transition for customers  in diverse industries and regions across the world.  At present ENGIE has a pipeline of approximately 30  hydrogen projects worldwide and a flagship, first of its kind green hydrogen project in South Africa.

Green Hydrogen

ENGIE has positioned itself as a major player in renewable hydrogen and operates across the entire hydrogen value chain – from production of renewable energies to end uses.

For us, green hydrogen is an essential component of the energy mix, as you can:

  • store energy and make it available when renewables are not producing electricity
  • develop more sustainable forms of mobility
  • decarbonize industrial uses.

Africa is a key market for the development of the Hydrogen economy.

In South Africa, Engie has partnered with Anglo American to launch the world's first zero-emissions hydrogen mining haul truck.

ENGIE is a founding member of the Hydrogen Valley Initiative with Anglo American and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in South Africa to unlock the potential of a Green Hydrogen economy for the country. Click below for this report.
